KVBW

Exciting project with great potential

The challenge

Relocation of the data center to a new location with increased requirements for bandwidth, availability and security of the data center coupling.

The solution

An edge and node disjoint dark fiber development of the new data center location in Karlsruhe. Active: Active SAN and LAN coupling via an optical DWDM-transport system with central AES 256 encryption of all services on layer 1.

The advantages

  • Uninterruptible expandability of the system to up to 40 services
  • Multi-service from 1/10 Gigabit Ethernet, 8 Gigabit Fibre Channel
  • Easy expansion with 16G / 32G Fibre Channel and 40G / 100G services with the same system technology
  • Simple operation of the system card with automatic configuration backup and restoration • Function ready handover and service
  • Support directly from the manufacturer in German language, 24/7 support if required

Municipal supply association Baden-Württemberg opts for Pan Dacom Direkt GmbH as a strategic system supplier

For the connection of the data center infrastructure in the new KVBW office building to a backup data center, the provision of an edge and node disjoint dark fiber connection, the associated building access with fiber optics and the procurement of an active transport system were in line with a tight schedule and resource plan bring to. The connection and the move to the new data center was a complete success. In addition to competent advice and a conclusive fine concept, Pan Dacom Direkt GmbH impressed not only with the best price, but also with timely delivery and implementation of the data center coupling.

Scalable solution for up to 8 Tbps

The data center coupling is based on the SPEED-OTS-5000 DWDM transport system, which can be expanded without interruption to up to 8 Tbps per dark fiber. In addition to the fully redundant system structure, multiservice connections such as Ethernet and Fibre Channel can be transmitted at different data rates. With the integrated AES 256 encryption, current and future requirements for secure data transport can be met.

Active: Active operation of the SAN infrastructure

The specialty in the planning of the SPEED-OTS-5000 system technology was the preparation of the transport infrastructure for the Active: Active operation of the Fibre Channel services with Broadcom (formerly Brocade) system technology via redundant dark fiber connections. Compensation coils were provided in the dark fiber connection in order to compensate the different lengths of the main line and the backup line. In addition to the SAN switches, LAN switches from Cisco Systems are also activated on the client side via the SPEED-OTS-5000 systems. The services are transmitted via a fully redundant WDM-system. Secure data transmission was implemented with the hardware-based AES 256 Layer 1 encryption on the DWDM system, which can also be activated later if required.

"The decisive factor in the project was the multi-service support in a hardware platform with the option to encrypt all services and the excellent staff support," commented Mr. Ritzler, team leader infrastructure. The operational handover with delivery, installation, training and the accessibility of the service team in German language make processes and coordination easy and quick to implement.

The Municipal Supply Association of Baden-Württemberg (KVBW) is a corporation under public law with the business areas of civil service provision, allowance, municipal personnel service and supplementary pension.
