LEONET and Pan Dacom Driving Bavaria's Digital Transformation Together!

What began as a Vision is now a nationwide network in Bavaria

As a company based in eastern Bavaria, Deggendorf, LEONET has set itself the goal of advancing the expansion of high-speed internet connections in Bavaria. To achieve this vision, LEONET‘s broadband network is continuously being expanded. New regions are gradually being connected with the help of Pan Dacom‘s DWDM, IP, and Access Technologies, as well as their radio link solutions.

The Challenge

  • Connecting 155 xWDM and 15 radio link sites
  • Converting BNG (Broadband Network Gateway) sites into multiple larger redundant systems; and Implementing CGN (Carrier-Grade NAT)
  • Peering routers are being replaced with devices that will meet future requirements

Begin the digital Expansion

In collaboration with Pan Dacom, the fiber optic networks expansion and growing demand for bandwidth achieves areawide coverage with sustainability, especially in rural areas. Securing Bavaria‘s digital future and providing maximum broadband for strong and fast internet connectivity throughout the region. With Pan Dacom Direkt’s SPEED-OTS-5000 system, the first passive CWDM connections were established as early as 2011. The associated cost savings enabled LEONET, to advance the expansion of the infrastructure quickly. The first Add-Drop sites were established in less than a year. Several radio link systems were also put in place at the same time.

Extensive Expansion

The growing demand for higher bandwidth internet connectivity in Eastern Bavaria‘s households and businesses prompted additional LEONET backbone network expansion measures. Bottlenecks were avoided by using Pan Dacom Direkt‘s 100G DWDM Muxponder technology. Furthermore, over 15 radio links were established or upgraded with Pan Dacom Direkt in 2019 by continuously connecting regions without fiber using licensed radio link systems. To further enhance the quality of LEONET services, the FTTx (Fiber-to-the-X) offering was expanded under the expert guidance of Pan Dacom Networking. For this purpose, Nokia hardware was selected in the IP MPLS environment to ensure seamless collaboration with the access networks. In aggregation and core, Nokia 7250 and SR 7750 systems with advanced Nokia SR-OS operating system are utilized, the latter equipped with additional features and a scalable CGN (Carrier-Grade NAT) solution up to 400G for costeffective implementation. These measures enable LEONET to provide Fiber-to-the-Home services, offering customers a top-notch broadband experience and ensuring a smooth transition to SDAN (Software Defined Access Networks) in the future.

Growing Together

The „coming together“ of the two companies, Pan Dacom Direkt and Pan Dacom Networking, has demonstrated how the synergy of shared strengths maximizes value creation. As a result, LEONET continues to rely on a collaborative partnership in the future. „We were able to quickly expand and upgrade new regions in Bavaria with fibre optic technololgy thanks to Pan Dacom‘s competent planning and sustainable, innovative approaches. With over 200 expansion areas and 3,500 km of fiber infrastructure, we are getting closer to our goal of creating digital equal opportunities for Bavaria‘s rural regions every day,“ says Frank Hellemink, Managing Director of Infrafibre Networks, a sister company of LEONET.
